Stories
of the Earth
(by Paul Gerardi)
If someone from another world
Landed here today
What stories would you tell them?
What is it you would say?
Would
you speak of Columbus' mighty ships
That crossed an ocean blue?
Would you talk of the Incans and Mayans
That have vanished from our view?
Is
the Great American Industrial Boom
A story you would speak?
Or might it be the World Wars
And the weapons that we keep?
Would
you tell of Martin Luther King
And the lives of JFK and Lincoln?
Would the message that John Lennon sang
Be something you were thinking?
Are
the spaceships at Cape Kennedy
An important fact for you?
Or is television the medium you see
That's helped us come unglued?
What
of the tall Great Pyramids
And the Sphynx and Stonehenge?
Are they the wondrous worldly works
On which a life depends?
When
someone comes from somewhere else
Asking of the lives we lead
Can we tell them there are fields of love
In which we plant our seed?
